Season 4 Episode 12

On this episode of Wellspringwords: The Podcast, Nkem closes out an insightful season 4 with reflections on expression, healing, and creativity. She touches on words as a modality of healing and self-understanding and even has a few special invitations for all listeners in the Wellspringwords community.

The bittersweet feeling of the final episode for this season is also shared by recollecting the various conversations that were brought forth. Nkem discusses how Wellspringwords began as a digital anthology, and highlights the importance of bringing to the surface the words of women of color to share their authentic truths.

“How do we move to a place of deep truth?”

She delves into the concept of softening the idea of understanding. Life isn't just black and white; there are multidimensional aspects to our being. She emphasizes channeling energies through our words. The world expects us to conform to certain ways of living, which can be both fragmented (and fragmenting) and restrictive. Living in such a world becomes challenging when you have a calling to create and express. This innate expressiveness was exploited and repressed within us, almost as if it was taken away.

She also mentions the practices of healing, advocating for more direct discussions on the topic. These conversations, especially some brought through past episodes of the podcast, have aimed to build a vocabulary for our healing processes and self-awareness journeys.

Nkem announces that enrollment is now open for Wellspringwords’ 8-week writing program “Heart Translation”, which offers weekly sessions, group connection, and guidance, on how to connect with different parts of yourself through your written expression, providing a space to truly learn who you are.

“What is your medicine?”

What innate qualities do we possess that aid in our healthy and organized growth? What helps us create more, and what aids in our healing? Nkem encourages us to observe our lives and the qualities we carry. For example, in a world that often lacks an inner fire, possessing a gift such as a courageous spirit can beautifully impact those around us, and can be considered as a personal medicine we offer to the world.

Nkem wraps up the last couple of minutes to discuss the throat center of our energy system as humans, highlighting the understanding of energy exchanges and the space for dialogue. She talks about striking the right balance—how talking too much without listening, and people overly-listening without honoring their own voices, can both be issues that need addressing. Discussed through Ifunanya and Ajeé’s episodes, the idea that boundaries and co-dependent measures can overtake, but create an imbalance on both sides.
