In this 5-week course, you can expect to create a coherent, genuine poetry collection that reflects your authentic poetic expression. You will be guided to assemble your collection using your already written poetic works as well as writing generated in each 90-min session.

During each session, you will:

  • reflect on written poetry currently existing in your journals, documents, folders, and notes

  • write new poetry

  • share your poetry with your course-mates & receive valuable feedback

According to the theme of the given week, you will move, as a group, through the process of assembling your poetry collection. If you’ve never collated a collection of poems and/or prose, bring your treasured writing, let’s tell your story through this meaningful and rewarding project. If you’re currently working on a collection, bring your existing project, let’s refine your material and strengthen your storytelling.

And in all, let’s co-create a space of genuine authentic creative expression, where we are free to write from the soul and be received by other writers — our kin in creativity, our tribe.

Registration includes an additional 45-min 1-1 writing coaching session (to be used by August 15th).

Each session, by the weeks

Week 1 - Selecting the poetry

Lean into the chaos and listen to the heart & body. During this week, we identify the story we hope for the collection to convey and practice creative authority in poetry selection.

Week 2 - Assembling the collection

Storytelling is only storytelling with a trajectory. During this week, we learn how our selected poems communicate with each other, and how they nourish the larger story.

Week 3 - Edits and additions

Your collection is a live and organic creature. As this course includes generative writing instruction, during this week, we learn the art of meaningful pruning and seeding for the overall flourishing of the collection.

Week 4 - Book design

The external reflects the internal. Whether you plan to design your book by yourself or work with a designer, understanding the visual component of your book is a necessary step in birthing your soulful expressions into the world. In this week, we’ll move through cover design and internal book design.

Week 5 - Self-publishing and cultivating readership

A more pragmatic week, we learn the details of self-publishing through Amazon, draft verbiage about the collection itself through reflections generated in the previous weeks, and discuss building organic and authentic readership for your writing at large.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my participation in the Creating Your Collection course. This is the most confident I have felt in my writing and storytelling abilities. The clarity and intuition I've gained from this process have made me a far more grounded and bold poet. Such a wonderful creative investment. I highly recommend!”

I enjoyed the structure as well as the fluidity of the course. I appreciated the space I had to discover and reveal my personal strengths and weaknesses without being pressured to create poetry in a specific way. My engagement with poetry in this course changed and deepened my voice with poetry. You provided clarity and language around the art of poetry that resonated with me. The facilitator was able to observe and meet me where I was, providing a safe space where I could show up and be honest in real time.
