an awakening

for mam and papi

i am so cold

and there is no one

to cover me

at dawn

the wind howls

through the bedrooms

what strong winds

and i hear you in the kitchenette

as you prepare

your coffee and it’s so cold

as you sit while

we sleep i hear you

my sleep is gone

or i dream on

in my dreams

as if life’s

a dream

and dreams are

as pedro calderón

de la barca says but here

i dream you in the kitchenette

cover me now i ask

mam and papi listen to me

rita guadalupe and pedro nava

remember me already

turn on the light

so i can see you

through my tears

as webbed eyes

oh how i dream you!

and i mustn’t awaken
