BA HOUSEA

BA HOUSEA, Self-Portrait Photography, 18in x 24in, 2024

My selections are from a series called KI GEBAN BA HOUSEA (Black Woman Spirit Free). It is about my relationship between sensuality and self-sovereignty. It is an intimate reclamation of my body—not just as flesh, but as an extension of spirit, thought, and emotion. Sensuality, often misunderstood or confined to the physical, becomes a force of deep presence, self-awareness, and liberation in this body of work.

Each piece in this series is an exploration of the way sensuality bridges the seen and unseen, the tangible and the divine. It is an act of embodiment, a ritual of presence, and a reclamation of the self beyond shame, beyond limitation—where the spirit breathes through skin, thought pulses through movement, and pleasure is recognized as an inherent right, not a privilege.”

D.Woodring, The Portrait Priestess

Damara Woodring, also known as The Portrait Priestess, creates art as ritual—each self-portrait a meditation and sacred act of reflection. Her work offers a quiet invitation to pause, breathe, and reconnect with one’s essence. Through intuitive imagery and emotional depth, Damara explores the distance we often feel from ourselves, using photography as a mirror to guide us home. With each piece, she crafts space for truth, stillness, and inner dialogue, transforming art into a soulful, transformative experience.
